Jewel Damsel (Microspathodon chrysurus) Care
The Jewel Damsel, Microspathodon chrysurus, is also known as the Yellowtail Damsel. These fish come from the Western Atlantic Ocean, from southern Florida down to Brazil. They have a dark blue body with small light blue spots and a bright yellow tail. These fish are VERY aggressive!
Although damselfish are colorful, hardy, reef safe, and affordable, these little fish can be very feisty and overly aggressive towards their tankmates. They will do best housed with large angelfish, tangs, triggers, and dottybacks.
Damselfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both meaty and plant foods, such as mysis and brine shrimp, marine algae, and flake food.
The Jewel Damsel can grow to be about 6″ and can be housed in aquariums as small as 50 gallons with plenty of live rock and good water flow. These cute fish are territorial and once acclimated to an aquarium, they consider the entire tank to be “their” territory.
These fish are reef safe and will not bother coral or invertebrates, but may be very aggressive towards other fish.
