SPOTTED HAWKFISH (Cirrhitichthys aprinus)
The Pixy Hawkfish, Cirrhitichthys aprinus, is also known as the Coral Hawkfish. These fish come from the Indo-Pacific region. They have a whitish-blue body with large red spots of varying shades.
Hawkfish are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as marine fish and crustacean flesh, clams, and other marine meaty foods and/or frozen carnivore foods.
Pixy Hawkfish require an aquarium of 30 gallons or more with plenty of live rock for hiding and perching places. These fish are very aggressive and should only be kept in a tank with larger aggressive fishes such as dottybacks, large angelfishes, surgeonfishes, and triggerfishes.
They are considered reef safe “with caution” because although they are safe with coral, they may attack both fish and invertebrates.
