Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) Care
The Moorish Idol, Zanclus cornutus, comes from the Indo-Pacific region. These attractive fish have an unusual flat or disc-shaped body that has thick white, yellow, and black bands. It has a long white filament on the dorsal.
These fish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both plant and meaty foods, including enriched squid, clams, scallop, shrimp and a plentiful supply of algae. They should be fed multiple times a day. They are extraordinarily picky eaters and are difficult to keep in an aquarium because of this.
Moorish Idols require an aquarium of at least 125 gallons with plenty of live rock for grazing and lots of horizontal area for swimming. They are peaceful fish and can be kept in either a reef tank or fish-only tank.
They are considered reef safe “with caution” because they are known to nip at some polyps and smaller inverts.
