Ornate Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon ornatus) Care
The Ornate Leopard Wrasse, Macropharyngodon ornatus, can reach up to 5″ in length and requires at least a 75 gallon aquarium. As with all leopard wrasses this fish needs a deep fine sand bed to live in and sleep. We recommend at least 3 to 4 inches of fine sand be both in any QT tank and the final display tank for them to be healthy. They require aquariums with tight fitting covers as they can be easily scared and will attempt to jump out of the tank. They will likely hide for several days when first introduced to a new aquarium and have even been known to hide for as much as 5 days when they first arrive.
Your aquarium should be well established and needs to large quantities of live rock to search for prey, such as small crustaceans, tiny snails, copepods, and zooplankton.
Ornate Leopard Wrasses are carnivorous and must be fed a diet rich in meaty foods. They Will readily accept most meaty frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clams, mussels along with high quality flake and pellet food. Feed small amounts 2 or 3 times per day. If it is appearing to not be getting sufficient food, try some live foods, such as black worms (Lumbriculus variegatus) or adult fortified brine shrimp.
