Brittle Starfish (Ophiocoma echinata) Care
The Brittle Starfish, Ophiocoma echinata, is also known as the Blunt-Spined Brittle Star. These sea stars come from the Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They have a small, round central disc with long, slender arms and are mostly brown, black or gray in color with short spines on the arms.
Brittle Starfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both meaty and green foods, such as algae and scraps they can find in the tank. You can provide supplemental food like mysis and brine shrimp and small pieces of fresh and frozen seafood.
They can reach up to 10″ and require an aquarium of at least 20 gallons with plenty of live rock and a good sand bed.
NOTE: These sea stars are very sensitive to changes in salinity so acclimation should be done very slowly.
