Astrea Snail (Astrea tecta) Care
Astrea Snail, Astrea tecta, also go by the scientific name Lithopoma tectum and are also known as the American Star Shell Snail, Astrea Turbo Snail, and the West Indian Star Snail. These snails have a cone-shaped shell that is typically greenish in color.
These herbivores are algae-eating machines and a wonderful addition to any tanks cleanup crew. They should get most, if not all, of their dietary requirements from algae living in the tank. If your aquarium has limited algae growth you may need to provide supplementary food like vegetable-based pellets or dried seaweed.
They will only grow to about 1″ in size and can be kept in tanks as small as 10 gallons. It is recommended to have at least one of these snails for every 5 gallons of water in your tank.
They are easy to care for and totally reef safe.
NOTE: They can be very sensitive to changes in salinity so be sure to give them plenty of acclimation time.
